The Ultimate
Business Credit Guide

The step-by-step system to build business credit using only your EIN — no personal guarantee required.

01

Incorporate Your Business

Form an LLC or Corporation. Sole proprietorships cannot build separate business credit. Your business entity must be legally registered in your state to establish a separate credit identity.

  • Form an LLC or Corporation
  • File with your Secretary of State
  • Use a registered agent if needed
02

Get Your EIN

Apply for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS — it's free and takes minutes online. Your EIN is the business equivalent of a Social Security Number and is required for all credit applications.

  • Apply free at IRS.gov
  • Instant online issuance
  • Required for all business credit
03

Open a Dedicated Business Bank Account

Keep all business finances completely separate from personal. Lenders and vendors will verify your business bank account. Mixing personal and business finances is one of the most common credit-killing mistakes.

  • Use your EIN to open the account
  • Maintain consistent deposits
  • Never mix personal & business funds
04

Get a Dedicated Business Phone & Address

Register a dedicated business phone number and address that matches your other filings. Use a VoIP number like Google Voice or a VOIP service. Make sure you're listed in 411 / national directories.

  • List in 411 directories
  • Match address across all filings
  • Use a professional virtual office if needed
05

Register with Business Credit Bureaus

Register your business with Dun & Bradstreet (get your free D-U-N-S number), Experian Business, and Equifax Business. These are the three major business credit bureaus that lenders check.

  • Get a free D-U-N-S at DNB.com
  • Register with Experian Business
  • Register with Equifax Business
06

Get Your First Net-30 Vendor Accounts (Tier 1)

Apply to Tier 1 starter vendors who report to the business credit bureaus without requiring an established credit score. These are your first tradelines. Pay invoices early every time — NET 30 means you pay within 30 days.

  • Quill, Uline, Grainger are classic starters
  • Pay invoices before the due date
  • Apply using your EIN only
07

Build Up Through Tiers

After establishing 3-5 Tier 1 accounts with good payment history, advance to Tier 2 accounts (store cards like Office Depot, Staples, etc.), then to Tier 3 (fleet cards, VISA/MC business cards without personal guarantees).

  • Build 3-5 accounts per tier before advancing
  • Never miss a payment
  • Monitor your PAYDEX score monthly
08

Access Business Funding

With a strong business credit profile (PAYDEX 80+, 10+ tradelines, 2+ years business age), you can access business lines of credit, SBA loans, and other funding without personal guarantees — protecting your personal assets.

  • Target PAYDEX score of 80+
  • Build to 10+ active tradelines
  • Keep business credit utilization under 30%
